South West Example Advanced Practice Trainee Induction Pack

An induction programme provides the trainees with information required for their new role.   A planned program can help trainees to adjust to their new role, it is a chance to reduce any anxieties and eliminate confusion.

Below you will find an example list of induction materials that can be used for Advanced Practice trainees.

We have included within the pack some information that may be of help to you but if you have any questions or concerns before or during your training, please don’t hesitate to speak to us. We are here to support you.


Use this section to inform trainees about their new organisation.

Examples of information to include are:

  • Data about the organisation (size/number of patients/beds)
  • Lists of services and departments
  • Data about the local area
  • Travel to and from the hospital
  • Organisational chart
  • Senior management/educational supervisor/additional educational support
  • A map of the site or building
  • Parking

Use this section to provide a list and/or link to where the trainee can find the organisations policies, rules and procedures.

Examples of policies to include are:

  • Incident reporting
  • Complaint’s process
  • Uniform / phone

Provide your trainee with access information for the IT systems they will require.

Examples of systems that can be included are:

  • IT Log in to organisation’s computers
  • Organisation email address
  • Online systems needed within their clinical setting

Use this section to provide your trainee an overview of any placement information.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Learning opportunities/courses
  • Job plan and timetable
  • Placement rules and procedures
  • Facilities
  • Absence reporting

Provide your trainee with information regarding learning within their placement.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • What the trainee can expect from the organisation
  • Specific supervision support/educational supervisor/timetable of scheduled meetings.
  • Trainee documentation for personal development plans and portfolio/ logbook suggestions. Three-year plan
  • The organisations expectations from the trainee
  • The trainee’s responsibilities
  • Accountability and delegation

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Library access
  • Access to catalogues and databases
  • Internet access / Wi-Fi
  • Printing and photocopying
  • Dates for Study skills session
  • APPS

It can be a stressful time for a new trainee when they are living and working in

an unfamiliar place. It is important issues and concerns are dealt with promptly and the trainee feels well supported.

Provide your trainee with information regarding how to approach any issues and concerns they may have. 

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Policies regarding raising concerns
  • Who to contact for different types of issues
  • How to report incidents
  • Bullying and harassment policy
  • Freedom to Speak Up Guardians
  • Specific personnel support for advanced practitioner trainees

Use this section to provide the trainee with information about the organisation’s staff benefits, initiatives, groups and clubs.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Staff benefits
  • Staff groups and clubs
  • Staff support

Use this section to provide the trainee with information about the organisation’s wellbeing resources and Freedom to Speak Up information.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Staff wellbeing initiatives 
  • Physical health facilities
  • Mental health resources
  • Freedom to Speak Up guardian

The Trainee may be new to the local area, use this section to provide the trainee with any useful information they might need to enhance their experience.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Local travel information
  • Clinics and GP Surgeries
  • Local food retailers / restaurants

Use this section to provide the trainee with any suggested reading that will be of interest.

Examples of information that can be included are:

  • Websites (Centre for Advanced practice, NMC, HCPC)
  • Interesting articles
  • Journals
  • Podcasts
  • YouTube play lists
  • APPS
