Resources for Supervisors

Below you will find a collection of resources which are relevant to any supervisor supporting Advanced Practice development in the workplace. We encourage you to explore these and reflect on your supervision practice.

The Importance of Supervision in Advanced Practice

This video explores the importance of supervision in advanced practice. High quality supervision is crucial for all trainee advanced practitioners. It supports the development of their confidence and capability, and underpins patient and practitioner safety. We visited the paediatric team at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to discuss their experience of advanced practice supervision. We examine how effective supervision is essential for their trainee advanced practitioners to develop into an autonomous practitioner.

In late 2025 the Workforce Training & Education Directorate published an Educator Learning Library to support multi-professional supervisors. The training opportunities listed in this library highlight what was available at time of publication and covers a range of self-directed, asynchronous, learning activities of varying duration / commitment. The learning opportunities are broadly appropriate for any health and social care profession to work through as a means of upskilling, developing and cementing skills as a clinical educator / supervisor.

The Learning Library material is available within the member file area of this NHS futures group: South West – Safe Learning Environment Charter – Futures

The Safe Learning Environment Charter supports the development of positive safety cultures and continuous learning across all learning environments in the NHS. It is underpinned by principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The Charter was created in response to healthcare learners’ feedback on their clinical experiences in maternity services, set out in the Kirkup (2015 and 2022) and Ockenden (2020 and 2022) reports.
