Save the Date: National Advancing Practice Conference
Join the Annual Centre for Advancing Practice Conference: online live event 8th and 9th November
We would really love for you to showcase the amazing work that is being undertaken within the Midlands region and therefore invite you to submit a proposal to present at one of the conference sessions or submit a poster abstract. The submission can be around any aspect of advanced practice, such as the 4 pillars of advanced practice, workforce and service transformation, supervision, or the impact these roles have on improving patient care and service delivery.

Important timelines:
- Application portal for submissions is now open!
- Deadline for session abstract submissions – 28th July 2023
- Deadline for poster submissions – 1st September 2023
- Conference – Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th November 2023
- Poster voting results – 9th November 2023 4pm

Apothecaries Prize 2023-2024
If you are an Advanced Clinical Practitioner Pharmacist, you may wish to apply for The Society of Apothecaries invites applications for the award of the Apothecaries’ Prize for 2023- 2024.
Origin of the prize to mark the 400th Anniversary of the granting of its Royal Charter by King James I in 1617, the Society of Apothecaries established an appeal fund for making grants in three areas. One of these was the support of the newly established Apothecaries’ Prize.
Criteria for candidates The Prize is aimed at doctors at pre-consultant level, i.e. within the last three years of training, or, in pharmacy training, those practicing at Advanced Stage II of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Faculty level or similar.
Application is open now and deadline is Sunday 15th October 2023.
Mary Hutchinson – Case Study (Showcase)
We have been asking you to submit your case studies through to the faculty and we have had some great submissions to showcase the amazing work our Advanced Practitioners are doing, across the region.
We are starting by showcasing the work of Mary Hutchinson, who is so passionate about advanced practice and began the newly renamed Midlands Advanced practice forum, bring together multi-professionals and specialities together in a place to share practice and knowledge. You may know her from many aspects of her amazing career and from our collaborative conferences that we have hosted together between the forum and faculty.
We hope this inspires you to send across to us your examples of practice and hope you enjoy reading about Mary’s career as an Advanced Practitioner.

Advancing Practice for Learning Disability and/ or Autism Network
The Advancing Practice for Learning Disability and/or Autism Network hosted their second webinar on 20 June 2023, with over 100 people attending. The slide deck from the webinar can be found here, and recordings from the main speakers will be available on the network platform soon. If you would like to sign up to the network, please complete this form.
The Network is also looking for volunteers to join the implementation group. The group will help shape the direction of the network platform, plan relevant webinars, and ensure the sustainability of the network. It is a fantastic opportunity for those who volunteer to develop evidence for their personal portfolios against their leadership pillar.
To be part of the implementation group you should be a trainee/ recognised advanced practitioner or aspiring/ recognised consultant practitioner in learning disability and/or autism. If you are interested in joining the group, please email learning.disability@hee.nhs.uk or Alison Whalley, the Faculty’s Advanced Practice Training Programme Director for Learning Disabilities and Autism: alison.whalley@hee.nhs.uk.
The first implementation group will take place on 18 July 2023 12-1pm, and meetings will likely be every two weeks.
Trainee Data Collection Form
We have implemented the usage of a ‘Trainee Data Collection Form’, which allows for effective monitoring of advanced practitioner trainees across the region. It’s therefore important that we obtain a reliable dataset of trainees (both apprenticeship and commissioned). The dataset provides us with key information such as registrant backgrounds, and for tracking pauses, progression, and completions.
If you are an advanced practitioner trainee in the Midlands in either year 1, or 2, or 3, and have not done so already, please complete the Trainee Data Collection Form via this link.
If you are an organisational advanced practice lead or equivalent, we will have previously sent you an email with the link to circulate to your trainees and will share again to follow up at various points in the year.
Content Request – Call for Ideas (We want to hear from you)
A post pandemic world has taught us that we can be more connected than ever before and share content in more ways than one.
We want to hear from you, our valued readers, trainee and qualified practitioners; are there any webinar, update bulletin, and website topics or content we could consider that may be useful for you? Send us information of networks and forums they you are involved in that we can publicise in upcoming bulletins.
We have created a short form for you to let us know what you want to hear from us.
Education Forums
The Midlands faculty are hosting a series of educational forums as a pilot this year. These are open to Advanced Practitioner trainees and qualified Advanced Practitioners who feel they may benefit from the topics covered. They are aimed at those working in Primary/ Urgent Care. Please email us for any further information and if you would like to be involved in planning sessions or to present in the future on apfac.midlands@hee.nhs.uk
New Network for Paediatric Advanced Practitioners
The Paediatric Advanced Practice Network (PAPn) is a newly established network looking to expand its membership and engagement across the UK. This recently established Paediatric Advanced Practice Network are looking for Paediatric Advanced Practitioners and Advanced Practitioners working with children and young people that would like to join a paediatric focused network supported by Partners in Paediatrics.
The Network aims to:
- develop a platform for networking and raising the profile of paediatric advanced practice within the UK
- provide learning opportunities and resources and sharing of best practice and research
- work together to support service development, education and research
The group also looks to:
- provide advice and guidance for professionals regionally and nationally
- provide peer support for paediatric advanced practitioners
- educational conference to share knowledge and expertise to the regional and national colleagues
- inform professional opinion at an intra-regional and national level

International Journal for Advancing Practice
Please remember to contribute to the International Journal for Advancing Practice – this journal is for all of us involved in advanced practice developments. As was noted by the Centre for Advancing Practice in the preliminary edition of the journal – it is intended to be a partnership between colleagues in the advanced practice community, with individuals from multi-professional groups and with different perspectives contributing papers to allow the sharing of innovations in advanced practice. Articles of all types are welcomed for submission, including clinical reviews, research papers, service improvement evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, commentaries, evidence reviews, literature reviews and editorials.
In the first full edition of the journal published in April, we have been pleased to see contributions from advanced practitioner colleagues across the Midlands writing about journal clubs for advanced practitioners, palliative and end-of-life care, and the research pillar of advanced practice.

Midlands Road Show – Wednesday 19th July 2023
Following on from the Regional Conference: Advanced Practice: Reconnecting the Midlands that took place in Birmingham, March 2023, the Midlands Advanced Practice Forum is hosting a follow on roadshow to the event. ICN NP/APN Conference – Aberdeen, Scotland, UK 2024
Please save the date for the 13th International Council of Nurses Nurse Practitioner / Advanced Practice Nursing Network biennial Conference, 9 – 12 September 2024, which will be taking place in the UK next year, in the Scottish Highlands of Aberdeen.
The 2024 conference will promote stimulating and thought-provoking exchanges, offering delegates the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and experiences in both an educational and social environment.
Please note whilst the conference is coordinated by the Nurse Practitioner / Advanced Practice Network of the International Council of Nurses it is envisaged the content and sessions will have a multi-professional applicability and relevance beyond nursing.
The 2024 themes for this normally well-attended international conference are:
- Building socially and environmentally responsible models of care in Scotland
- Collaborative, multi-professional models of learning
- Innovation, including digitally enabled care
- Remote and rural models of advanced practice
The North of Scotland Advanced Practice Academy (NoSAPA), will host the 2024 ICN NP / APN Network Conference, which is set to attract over 800 delegates from around the world from 9th to 12th September 2024. The last time this conference was held in the UK was back in the Olympics year of 2012 at Imperial College, London.
