Midlands Faculty for Advancing Practice – Update Bulletin January 2026

Drop-in sessions for trainee Advanced Practitioners

We have an opportunity to discuss your training journey to date and link with your peers. Alongside this, have your queries answered from Elizabeth Bennett-Hayes, Training Programme Director, from your Midlands Advanced Practice team.

There will be signposting to resources, guest speakers from different specialities who will share their experiences from their trainee programme. Qualified Advanced Practitioners will also demonstrate how the role has impacted their service users.

Feedback from those attending the sessions will gauge and target the areas which you feel would benefit you most. The agenda will reflect this going forward.

Thursday19th March: 12.30 – 13.00 and 13.00 – 13.30

An Update from the Midlands Advanced Practice Forum

I would like to re-introduce myself, Hirminder Kaur Uhbi, as the new Chair for the Midlands Advanced Practice Forum (MAPF).

There are currently 450 people on the forum’s email distribution list, and the Forum has achieved its goals of becoming a multi-professional group, due to the many professions in attendance.

As a forum we have enabled the creation of friendships, the opportunity to network and support for development of all those on their advanced practice journey’s. Through our education webinars virtually and our roadshow events, in person.

With continued passion and expertise from the Forum’s committee and members, MAPF’s key aims for the future are below.

  • To continue to build upon and support the Midlands advanced practice workforce
  • Focus on creating and delivering events
  • Build upon our resources and Forum communications

Our last in-person Roadshow was hosted by Nottingham University. The event brought together examples of advanced practice from the region. Presentations included the Midlands and United States Grand Round Twinning project, experiences of tackling and completing a master’s from different perspectives. Alongside, a student showcase introducing the National Rehabilitation Centre.

Our next roadshow events will be at Lincoln University, in May 2026 please keep an eye out for communications around this.

Get Involved in a Research Project – Are you an ACP who has worked in the Emergency Department?

Would you like to take part in a research study focussing on the impact of unintentional clinical error on Advanced Practitioners working in Emergency Medicine? You need to have worked in the emergency department (ED) at the time of the event, but not necessarily still working there at present.

My Name is Jon, and I am an Advanced Practitioner working in ED and a senior lecturer in Advanced Practice. I have an interest in the impact of unintentional error on the clinician and have chosen this as a basis for my thesis. I am undertaking this study for a Professional Doctorate award.

About the Study:

I am looking for volunteers to take part in a one-hour interview via MS Teams to review the wider impact of error on registrants working as Advanced Practitioners. Your insight would be valuable to investigate this subject further as there is a lack of evidence at present relating to this topic.

If you would be interested to take part and would like further information, please email Jonathan.Mounsey@northampton.ac.uk. Alternatively you can scan the QR code.

Advanced Practice in Midwifery Conference

In the autumn, the first national conference on Advanced Practice in Midwifery was held at University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire. This event increased the awareness of advanced practice in midwifery and was attended by candidates from all regions of England, along with Northern Ireland.

It succeeded in establishing connections amongst our regional and national colleagues, collaborating midwives, and promoting the planning and sharing of ideas.

Following on from this we plan, as a community of practice within maternity, to continue these conferences yearly. Thereby, continually enhancing service provision, disseminating knowledge and promoting an evidence-based workforce within our Midwifery Advanced Practice colleagues. If you’d like more information, have any questions or would to be involved please contact Elizabeth.bennetthayes@uhcw.nhs.uk
